When you walk into a business, what do you do next? You sit down, check your books and make sure everything is in order, yes you check all your books, then you go over your budget to make sure that you have enough money set aside for the month. After you have done this, you call your client, tell them what they are going to need to do and if there is anything else that they might need. What do you do next?
Well, what do you do the next day? Well, of course you still call your client, tell them what they need to do, but you also need to go over your schedule with them, what projects are next, what needs to be done and what can wait until next week. This is where having a calendar will come in handy. These are all important things to a client.
If you are trying to find out what are 3 important things to a client, one of the first things to ask yourself is what are you getting out of it. If you are a business owner, than the answer might be that you need the business. And in that case, you might want to make sure you’re paying for things that are actually worth it, and are actually going to make you money. If you are a salesman, then most likely you are trying to sell something, and one of the easiest ways to do that is to give a free product. This is not always the best thing for the client, but it gets them hooked on you and makes them want to see what else you can do for them.
Another one of the things that I do is get a lot of referrals. Referrals are such an important part of any business. I don’t know if you know what a referral is, but when someone refers a person to you, their name goes into the mix. You don’t want to just send a name card out and expect results. You have to take care of business, and build a relationship with your clients.
The third thing that I really focus on is my follow-up. I always call or email the clients three times after I have met with them. I want to make sure that I get their approval before I contact them again. If they say no, then I know I have to get a little more creative in my approach, but I still want to follow up.
As you have seen from the list above, all three of those are things that can help you in your work. But, you might be wondering just how to go about putting them to practice. Well, the first step is to focus on giving your clients value. When you give value to your client’s requests, you show them that you care about them. This is the most important step because it will make them feel good about you.
The second step is to respect their time. They aren’t going to be impressed with big fancy office equipment. Really, they aren’t going to want to work with you if you don’t treat them like they are valuable. That doesn’t mean you have to do everything in your power to make them feel valuable, though. Just keep in mind that you are working in an industry where people are busy. You might want to slow down and make sure that you take care of the things that they need.
And lastly, I would really encourage you to make sure that you follow up on things. There are times when you have done a great job for a client, but they aren’t going to remember it. So, don’t let it go. Take care of business, listen to the clients, and respond to them accordingly.
